Gray eyes, which were once considered a shade of blue, are now classified as an independent color by scientists. With this new classification, green eyes lose their title of the rarest color, and it is stated that gray eyes are found in only 1% of the world’s population.
According to the research, gray eyes have lower melanin levels and reflect light differently, creating a unique tone. This characteristic makes gray eyes optically distinct from blue eyes. Additionally, genetic studies suggest that individuals with gray eyes may share a common ancestor.
The most common eye color in the world is brown, which accounts for 55% to 79% of the population. Blue eyes range from 8% to 10%, while hazel eyes are found in around 10%. According to the new classification, gray eyes are considered the rarest eye color, found in only 1% of the global population.
