Sony is testing 1440p resolution support for its PlayStation 5 console, a highly-requested addition. Testers will get access to a new PS5 system software beta today that includes 1440p support, curated game lists for their library, and new social features.

Who can benefit from 1440p support on PlayStation 5?

The new 1440p video output option will allow PS5 owners to select this resolution on compatible TVs and monitors. If games support 1440p, native 1440p output will be supported. Otherwise, 4K games will benefit from anti-aliasing improvement by supersampling up to 1440p output.

PlayStation 5 VRR

The biggest feature that Playstation 5 turns off may be VRR support. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support was not included in the PlayStation 5 game console, although it was on the rival Xbox Series X from the beginning. The shortcoming of the feature on the PlayStation 5 side was closed very recently. According to Sony’s official announcement, the VRR feature will work in supported and non-supported games. The company has added a special option to the VRR settings for this.

With the Variable Refresh Rate technology, a frame/refresh rate match is made between the screen and the console to achieve a smooth gaming experience without “tearing”. To benefit from VRR, the TV to which PlayStation 5 will be connected must also support VRR via HDMI 2.1.

According to Sony’s statement, the first games to fully support VRR were:

PlayStation 5 owners with the beta software will be able to check if their HDMI-connected display supports 1440p in the screen and video section of the PlayStation 5 dashboard. Sony warns that Variable Refresh Rate won’t be supported at 1440p and will only work at 1080p and 4K on the PS5.
