China has announced the launch of the world’s first internet network capable of transmitting data at 1.2 terabits per second. This is 10 times faster than any existing internet line globally. If used at full efficiency, 150 movies can be downloaded in one second.
China launches 1.2 terabit internet network
China has launched a new internet line in cooperation with Tsinghua University, China Mobile, Huawei and Cernet Corporation. The internet network between Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou covers an area of more than 3 thousand kilometers.
Researchers say it has overturned industry predictions that 1 terabit per second networks would not emerge until 2025. By comparison, most countries’ networks run at 100 gigabits per second. Even the US has upgraded its network to 400 gigabits per second with Internet2.
Wang Lei, Vice President of Huawei, said the network could transmit 150 movies in one second. Xu Mingwei, a researcher at Tsinghua University, likened it to replacing 10 standard tracks with a single super-fast train track.
China’s new 3,000 km line is part of an ongoing project for research, education and technological applications. This project, called the Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI), wants to make China a pioneer in building a new internet.
The launch of the FITI network has allowed China to consolidate its leadership in next-generation internet infrastructure and intimidate other countries. The Asian country wants to test new frontiers in areas such as connected vehicles, industrial 5G and advanced research networks.
