Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be unveiled next month. However, leaks that emerged before the announcement showed that the next-generation flagship platform will be more expensive than its predecessor. This price increase is expected to be reflected directly on phones.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 comes with a hike
According to a claim shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will cost manufacturers around $240. This is a 20 percent increase compared to the $200 price of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
However, the scope of the $240 price is unknown. In other words, it is unclear whether Qualcomm is only charging for the processor or for the Snapdragon X80 5G modem package. Earlier leaks showed that Qualcomm could offer two different versions with and without modem.
Among the possible reasons for the price increase is TSMC’s transition to the 3nm process. Also, Qualcomm started using its own Orion CPU cores with this generation. Both factors have increased the company’s R&D costs.
Of course, big manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi have exclusive deals with Qualcomm. So Qualcomm may offer special pricing to tech giants. Still, until Qualcomm makes an official statement, the $240 price tag should be considered as a rumor.
The price increase in the chipset may also be reflected on smartphone manufacturers. However, the fact that the new chip offers significant improvements in performance may justify this price increase.
