Apple has once again demonstrated its dominance in the global smartphone market with the iPhone. Despite the powerful hardware of Android flagships, Apple’s ecosystem and brand loyalty continued to increase sales momentum in 2023 and the best-selling smartphone was iPhone.

The top seven best-selling smartphones of 2023 are all iPhones. Devices in the Android ecosystem failed to catch up with Apple. According to Counterpoint’s latest report, the iPhone 14 series and iPhone 15 series maintained their dominance in December 2023, while the iPhone 13 maintained its strong presence among consumers.
The iPhone 14 was the best-selling smartphone of 2023, accounting for a significant share of total iPhone sales. While Apple’s overall sales remained flat in 2023 compared to the previous year, the company managed to maintain its market position in an environment of declining sales from Android competitors.
Only Samsung’s affordable Android devices were among the top 10 best-selling smartphones in December 2023, suggesting that consumers prefer Apple’s premium products over high-end Android flagships.
The absence of flagship devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series from the best-seller list, despite the launch of a major Android flagship in January 2024, suggests that Android is not competing in the global market.
Counterpoint only focuses on December 2023. However, Canalys’ report shows the dominance of iPhones more clearly for the whole of 2023. Samsung’s presence in the global smartphone market was limited to the lower ranks, with mid-range devices like the Galaxy A54 5G in the top 10.
Looking ahead to 2024, Apple’s momentum is expected to continue later in the year with the popularity of the iPhone 15 series. Chinese brands may also enter the market with new devices. However, there is a common desire to see more diversity in the smartphone market, and increasing sales of Android devices is seen as crucial to the long-term health of the platform and the overall smartphone ecosystem.
