6G tests have started: You won’t believe the internet speed it reaches!

Researchers from University College London have achieved a groundbreaking success in wireless data transmission and internet speed. The team reached a speed of 938 gigabits per second (Gbps), surpassing the average speed of current 5G phone connections by an astonishing 9000 times. This incredible speed would allow users to download over 20 full-length movies every second.

The research team, led by Professor Zhixin Liu, achieved this remarkable speed by using a frequency spectrum that had never been tested before. The system, operating across a wide range between 5 GHz and 150 GHz, transmits data using both radio waves and light.

The researchers combined the advantages of high-speed electronics and microwave photonic technologies to achieve this success. Signals between 5 and 75 GHz were generated using high-speed digital-to-analog converters, while high-frequency millimeter wave band signals such as the W-band (75-110 GHz) and D-band (110-150 GHz) were created by mixing optically modulated signals with frequency-locked lasers.

Prof. Liu likens the transition to 6G technology to turning narrow, single-lane roads into 10-lane highways. “Just like in traffic, we need wider roads to carry more vehicles,” Liu said, adding that they are in discussions with smartphone manufacturers and network providers.

Meanwhile, exciting 6G developments are also coming from Japan. A group of Japanese telecommunications companies has developed a high-speed 6G wireless device capable of transmitting data 20 times faster than 5G. This device can send data at 100 Gbps over a distance of up to 100 meters.

This research is of great importance, especially for next-generation radio access networks (RAN) that require high-speed wireless communication exceeding 100 Gbps between base stations. Researchers believe that as this technology becomes widespread, our daily internet usage will be completely transformed.
