Tesla maintains its leadership among electric car brands. The company’s extensive Supercharger network is an indication of this. However, Tesla is determined to share its resources. According to a White House memo, CEO Elon Musk plans to let electric vehicles made by other companies recharge at Supercharger stations.

Tesla will let other electric vehicles use Supercharger stations later in 2022

The White House wants to increase investments in electric vehicles; they even announced $700 million in funding to private companies to ramp up electric vehicle charger production and expand access to chargers nationwide. So, as you can imagine, Tesla also wanted to get a slice of the pie and decided to open Supercharger stations for other models.

Tesla has been allowing all-electric vehicles to use its Supercharger plugs in several European cities for quite some time. However, this is only a limited pilot program and does not include electric vehicles in the USA. Fortunately, Elon Musk‘s opinion changed due to the plans of the White House.

Later this year, Tesla will begin production of new Supercharger equipment that will enable all-electric vehicles in the US to use Tesla Superchargers. If the new EV charger program works, non-Tesla electric vehicle owners must download Tesla’s smartphone app to access the stations.

How many Supercharger stations in North America?

According to Wikipedia, there are 1,430 Supercharger stations in North America. These Stations have a connector to supply electrical power at maximums of 72 kW, 150 kW, or 250 kW. Supercharger stations are fast, reliable, and easy to use. Still, the network has been exclusive to Tesla owners, meaning someone driving a vehicle of another brand wouldn’t be able to use it.
