Apple is reportedly working on launching a journaling app, code-named Jurassic, for iPhone users, aiming to help them keep track of daily activities and contribute to their physical and mental health, according to The Wall Street Journal. This move signifies Apple’s increased focus on the mental health market and puts the tech giant in competition with existing journaling apps like Day One.
Jurassic: On-device analysis for privacy and security
The upcoming Apple journaling app, code-named Jurassic, is designed to analyze users’ behavior to determine their typical daily routines, such as time spent at home versus other locations, and identify any deviations from the norm. A unique personalization feature will suggest potential topics for users to write about, including workouts or other notable activities. The app will also offer “All Day People Discovery” to detect users’ physical proximity to others.
While the app will have access to more user data than third-party journaling apps, including text messages and phone calls, Apple is prioritizing privacy and security in the app’s design. The analysis of users’ daily activities will be performed on-device, and journaling suggestions will be stored in the system for four weeks before being deleted.
Potential release and pricing details
Although the exact release date for Apple’s journaling app is unknown, it could potentially be announced as early as June during the WWDC event, where iOS 17 is expected to be previewed.
