A new patent application made by Sony Interactive Entertainment indicates that there will be some changes to the PlayStation 5 design.
Some rumors that emerged at the end of last year showed that Sony wanted to redesign the PS5 console. A new patent has fueled these claims. Sony is addressing an optical disk drive that can be mounted on electronic devices such as game consoles, computers, or audio-visual (AV) equipment.
Removable optical disk drive for PlayStation 5
The patent does not explicitly mention the PS5 console. However, it is quite compatible with previous claims. It was also reported that the device scheme in the patent is similar to the disk drive of PS5 models. However, it should not be forgotten that most disk drives resemble each other.
The possibility of gaining support for a removable disk drive for the PS5 is quite high. This innovation will offer more portability to users who prefer to play games using physical disks. It may also announce a cheaper PS5 version without an internal disk drive. This version will cater to users who do not want to purchase digital games.
Sony claims that removable disk drive support will make the device much lighter. In the patent description, it states, “The purpose of the present invention is to provide an optical disk drive that prevents the transfer of vibration of the main unit to the outer case.”
It is possible to say that this patent could also be valid for the PS5 Pro. A claim that emerged a while ago stated that the PS5 Pro would be offered to players in 2024.
