WhatsApp is getting a new feature to combat spam and fraud risks. According to an announcement by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, WhatsApp will now have the ability to automatically silence calls from unknown numbers. This means that calls from unregistered numbers will be filtered.
WhatsApp gets Silence Unknown Calls feature
WhatsApp continues to gain privacy-focused innovations. The messaging app’s new feature will provide users with increased protection by filtering unwanted calls. If you activate the feature, all calls from unknown numbers will be silenced, and you won’t receive any audio or visual notifications.
To enable the feature, you can follow the path: Privacy > Calls > Silence Unknown Calls. Although you won’t receive notifications after this setting, you can check the silenced calls from the call log. The log will include a note saying “muted unknown caller.”
WhatsApp developed its latest feature to combat spam calls. The platform initially developed a machine learning-based system and claimed to have developed a system that automatically detects spam calls. As a result, 50% of unknown calls were muted before reaching the user.
While the new call silencing feature is noteworthy, it still has some limitations. For example, when you activate this feature, even someone you know who is not in your contact list will be automatically silenced. Therefore, you won’t see the call even if it’s from someone you recognize.
WhatsApp also introduced a “Privacy Control” that introduces users to privacy features on the platform. This tool explains various privacy options available on the platform.
