Apple introduced the new operating systems at WWDC 23 event. The iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, which are still in beta, host many new features. Apple is taking significant steps in the field of health with the new iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and watchOS 10 versions.
Screen Distance feature is being introduced with iOS 17
The US tech giant is preparing to launch a new health feature called “iPhone Screen Distance” with iOS 17 for iPhone and iPad. This feature aims to reduce general eye fatigue for people of all ages and also reduce the risk of myopia (nearsightedness) in young children.
Apple recommends that users keep their iPhones and iPads at least 30 cm away from their eyes. With the Screen Distance feature, the company aims to encourage users to maintain a healthy viewing distance while using their iPhones and iPads. By doing so, the renowned tech company also wants to reduce the risk of eye disorders.
The Screen Distance feature uses the TrueDepth front camera system on iPhones and iPads to measure the distance between the user’s eyes and the screen. When the distance between the device and the user’s eyes is less than 30 cm, the Screen Distance feature sends an immediate full-screen warning to users, advising them not to keep their devices closer than 30 cm to their eyes for extended periods.
To address personal security concerns, Apple emphasizes that the camera does not capture any images or videos. Apple states that the collected data is kept only on the user’s device and not shared in any way.
It’s worth noting that the Screen Distance feature can only be used on FaceID-enabled iPad and iPhone models. The iOS 17, which will be available for general use with the release of the iPhone 15 model in September, can already be experienced by downloading the iOS 17 public beta version to your device.
Steps to enable the Screen Distance feature:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap on “Screen Time.”
- Select “Screen Distance.”
- Then, choose “Continue.”
- On the next page, tap on “Turn On Screen Distance.”
- Enable the “Screen Distance” feature.
