OpenAI made headlines when its co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was abruptly fired in recent months. Altman, who returned after the company’s employees put pressure on the board of directors, has officially resumed his position as OpenAI CEO.

OpenAI commissioned the law firm WilmerHale to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding Altman’s dismissal. The firm’s report said that although the previous board had the right to dismiss Altman, it did not do so in an “ethical manner”.

It found that Sam Altman was fired in a very short period of time, and that there was no return. The report also stated that Altman’s behavior did not justify his dismissal.

In light of these findings, OpenAI’s current board of directors was reorganized. Officially, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman became Sam Altman, while Greg Brockman was reappointed as President of the company.

Some changes have been made with the new management. These include new guidelines for AI, a whistleblower hotline and the addition of three new board members. These members will be Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman and Fidji Simo.

The leadership change seems to be a turning point for OpenAI, which wants to develop the last AI safely. Innovations in independent investigation and governance could help restore trust going forward.
