Surprising and unexpected news has come from the German automotive giant Mercedes. Mercedes has decided to halt the development of its new platform for luxury electric vehicles, the MB.EA Large. This platform was seen as a major innovation set to be released by 2028, but it seems plans have changed. Here are the logical reasons behind discontinuing the platform…
Unexpected electric move from Mercedes! MB.EA Large platform development halted
There are several reasons behind Mercedes’ decision to halt this platform dedicated to electric vehicles. First and foremost, the sales of EQE and EQS models are not meeting expectations. This situation must have put some pressure on Mercedes. These electric vehicles are one of the company’s strongest cards in the electric vehicle market, and the low sales have prompted them to question their future plans.
Because of this, the company has decided to invest more in internal combustion engine and hybrid models rather than electric vehicles. Additionally, they have decided to review their investments in new platforms. Halting the development of the MB.EA Large platform will save Mercedes between 4 and 6 billion euros.
This is not a small amount. This saving will pave the way for the company to invest in other areas, especially the evolving EVA2 platform. The updated version of the platform will reach values such as 800 volts and will use more efficient, compact batteries. So, Mercedes is not stepping back in this area; they are just opting for a more efficient use of resources.
While developing the new generation S-Class, GLE, and GLS models with plug-in motors, Mercedes will continue to offer electric vehicle models on the updated EVA2 platform. In other words, their commitment to electric vehicles is not completely over; they are just taking a more rational approach.
Mercedes’ strategic change has caused a big stir in the electric automotive industry. This decision probably means a lot to other car manufacturers as well. As we eagerly follow these developments as technology and automotive enthusiasts, we will see the impact of Mercedes’ new direction on the automotive world.
