At the WWDC 2024 keynote last week, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, an AI-based platform designed to enhance user interaction with their devices. However, the groundbreaking Apple Intelligence feature will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Mac and iPad models with M1 or newer chips.
Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro or higher
Apple Intelligence improves user experience using large-scale language models, but running these models requires high processing power. Apple’s head of AI and machine learning, John Giannandrea, stated that running large language models depends on factors like the device’s bandwidth, the size of Apple Neural Engine, and the device’s processing power. Although theoretically possible on older devices, their slower performance makes these models impractical.
Apple’s marketing chief, Greg Joswiak, emphasized that this decision is not a strategy to boost new iPhone sales. Even the latest iPad and Mac models aren’t fully compatible. Software engineering chief, Craig Federighi, mentioned that Apple always strives to bring new features to older devices, but Apple Intelligence requires specific hardware.
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, featuring the A17 Pro chip, will be the first devices to support these features. This chip includes a 16-core Neural Engine capable of 35 trillion operations per second. Additionally, these devices have at least 8GB of RAM, which is critical for Apple Intelligence to function effectively.
For users unable to use Apple Intelligence, iOS 18 will bring many new features. Home screen customization, a revamped Mail app, RCS support for messages, and new features for Safari, privacy, and maps will be available in iOS 18. These features will be usable on all devices supporting iOS 17, including the 2018 iPhone XR.
