As patent wars in the technology sector intensify, Samsung has suffered a major blow this time in a patent case it entered into with a California-based technology startup called Mojo Mobility. The Federal Court for the Eastern District of Texas ruled that Samsung infringed on five of Mojo Mobility’s patents related to wireless charging technology and ordered the company to pay $192 million in damages.

First of all, let’s say that this decision is one of the biggest financial burdens Samsung has ever faced regarding patent infringement. In fact, this case was first brought to the agenda at the beginning of 2024. At that time, the court ruled that Samsung should pay $67.5 million in compensation to Mojo Mobility.

However, due to some uncertainties regarding the differences between “continuous royalties” and “one-time royalties,” the case was reexamined. At the end of the process, the court re-evaluated the amount of compensation and sentenced Samsung to pay a higher price.

Mojo Mobility is known as a company that makes significant innovations in wireless charging technology. The company claims that it has developed a system that allows devices to be charged regardless of location and multiple devices to be charged at the same time with its near-field wireless charging technology.

As a result, it was concluded that Samsung had violated the patent by using this technology without permission. Although innovation fuels competition in the electronics world, such patent lawsuits can cause serious financial and reputational losses for companies.
