Google Moves Tensor Production from Samsung to TSMC
Google is making a significant step by transferring the production of its Tensor processors, specially designed for the flagship Pixel series, from Samsung to TSMC. The Tensor G5, codenamed “Laguna,” will now be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer N3E process.
According to Kamila Wojciechowska, known for her Google news insights, changes are expected in the core architecture of the Tensor G5 processor as well. The 1+3+4 core arrangement of its predecessor will be replaced by a 1+5+2 configuration.
Google is preparing to launch Gemini 2.0 in December, which is expected to revolutionize the field of artificial intelligence.
The Tensor G5 processor will be supported by a single high-performance Cortex-X4 core, five mid-range Cortex-A720 cores, and two energy-efficient Cortex-A520 cores. For the GPU, Google plans to utilize a new design from Imagination Tech.
Instead of the ARM Mali, Google is opting for a dual-core DXT-48-1536 GPU with this change. Additionally, the new processor aims to bring advanced graphics features such as ray tracing and GPU virtualization technology. The new NPU is expected to offer a performance of 18 or 9 TOPS (INT8 or FP16) with a 14% increase.
Moreover, the size of the new Google processor will be 121 mm², which is quite large for a processor. While the processor promises high performance with its features, it is expected to have an impact on the size of the devices.
