At CES 2025, the HDMI Forum announced plans for HDMI 2.2 to be available in the first half of this year. The next generation of connectivity technology will dramatically improve performance and deliver a more immersive streaming experience.
What will HDMI 2.2 offer?
With 96 Gbps bandwidth, HDMI 2.2 will support much improved resolutions and refresh rates. This will enable applications such as augmented and virtual reality, spatial environments and digital displays.
Much better audio-video synchronization will also ensure smooth and lag-free performance, even in complex setups. It will use the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) for this performance.
According to Chandlee Harrell, President of the HDMI Forum, the new specification is a direct response to the demand for high performance in the HDMI ecosystem. It is designed to support rapid advances in display technology and content creation.
A new Ultra96 HDMI cable will also be launched, specifically designed to handle the increased bandwidth and all the features of HDMI 2.2. This cable will undergo certification as part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program to guarantee quality and performance.
HDMI 2.x users will have access to the HDMI 2.2 specification when it is released in the first half of 2025. This upgrade promises to enhance the entire HDMI experience, from content creation to home entertainment.
