Apple recently announced the new Mac Studio, which comes with two processor options: the M4 Max and the new M3 Ultra. The company claims that the new M3 Ultra is the most powerful chip ever made, boasting a CPU performance 3.3 times faster and a GPU performance up to 6.4 times faster compared to previous models. But is that really the case? The latest performance test results seem to shed some light on the matter.
New Mac Studio’s M4 Max and M3 Ultra processors in performance test
The performance test of the new Mac Studio with the M4 Max and M3 Ultra processors has been conducted on Geekbench 6. Looking at the results, it appears that the new M3 Ultra isn’t necessarily much faster than the M4 Max, at least in terms of CPU performance.
The 32-core M3 Ultra processor achieved 3,221 points in single-core and 27,749 points in multi-core tests. In contrast, the 16-core M4 Max scored 3,921 points in single-core and 25,650 points in multi-core tests.
Considering these results, it’s clear that the M4 Max performs better in single-core tasks, while the M3 Ultra is only about 8% better in multi-core performance. It’s important to note that these results are specific to the Geekbench 6 platform, and different tests might show different outcomes.
In conclusion, if CPU performance is a priority for users, the more affordable M4 Max Mac Studio ($1,999) may be a better option. The M3 Ultra model ($3,999), on the other hand, could be more advantageous for GPU-heavy tasks.
