NFC Release 15, the new version of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, has been announced by the NFC Forum. The new standard increases the current communication distance of 0.5 centimeters to 2 centimeters, providing a four-fold increase in range. With this change, faster connections can be established between devices, data transfer becomes more stable, and the need for full alignment for interaction is eliminated.
New generation NFC version announced
The improved version brings increased performance, especially in areas of use such as payment systems, wearable devices, digital keys, and smart home solutions. While the connection success rate increases, touch-and-play type operations are faster. Developers are also offered more freedom in terms of device design and component placement.

Some new functions have also started to be supported with NFC Release 15. One of these is the ability to use smartphones directly as payment terminals. At the same time, connection processes for smart watches and various home products are simplified. The new version also provides wireless charging support up to 1 watt for small devices.
The technical infrastructure also supports applications such as Digital Product Passports (DPP), which the European Union will make mandatory within the scope of the circular economy. The system, built on the NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF), enables the tracking of products throughout their lifecycle and the performance of compliance checks with cloud-based services.
