The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) became the first public institution to initiate an energy transition in the broadcasting sector with the construction of a Solar Power Plant (SPP) in Van. The plant, built on a 127,000-square-meter site, was completed in just two months and has the capacity to generate approximately 18 million kilowatt-hours (18,000 MWh) of electricity annually. With this production, TRT will now meet 20% of its total electricity needs from the clean energy it generates.
TRT officially establishes a solar power plant
Comprised of 16,992 high-efficiency solar panels, the plant represents a first in the Turkish broadcasting sector with a renewable energy investment of this scale. The SPP project aims not only to reduce the institution’s energy costs but also to establish an environmentally friendly broadcasting approach.

TRT General Manager Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zahid Sobacı, in a statement about the project, said, “This environmentally friendly step, based on the effective and efficient use of public resources, is the first strategic step taken in TRT’s goal of becoming independent in energy production.”
Sobacı stated that this power plant is a starting point and that similar projects will be implemented in suitable areas of TRT in the coming period. The institution’s ultimate goal is to become a broadcaster capable of fully generating its own energy.
The solar power plant investment in Van goes beyond simply providing TRT with energy; it also stands out as a concrete example of the green transformation in the broadcasting sector. This initiative sets a guiding example for public institutions transitioning to environmentally friendly production models and is considered part of a long-term strategy in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.
