A step that could change the perception of push-button phones has come from Finnish technology company HMD Global. With the launch of the HMD 101 4G and HMD 102 4G models in China, the company is now integrating artificial intelligence into these simple devices. These affordable new models go beyond basic communication features and offer voice-activated digital assistant support.
Push-button phones gain AI support
The HMD 101 4G model is available for a remarkably low price of 18 euros. It was designed specifically for older users and those looking for a backup phone. Offering 4G VoLTE support, the device offers a convenient alternative for both business and personal use with its dual SIM card slot.

With its 2.0-inch LCD screen, large keypad, and simple interface, it aims for ease of use. The device also features an LED flashlight, a USB-C charging port, Bluetooth connectivity, FM radio via speakerphone, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The phone’s most notable innovation is its artificial intelligence assistant, powered by the DeepSeek platform. This digital assistant can dial phone numbers with voice commands, set alarms, report the weather, and respond to informational queries. Incorporating such functions into a simple push-button phone significantly expands the device’s usability.
The second model in the series, the HMD 102 4G, was launched with a price tag of approximately 20 euros. This model shares many similar features with the 101 4G. The key difference between them is the HMD 102 4G’s rear camera. Both devices feature AI-powered digital assistants.
It is not yet clear whether the new phones will be available in the European market. HMD Global has not made an official statement on this matter. However, the integration of AI into simple phones is considered a significant transformation in this category. This step makes access to modern digital services more accessible, especially for users less tech-savvy.
