MG is breaking new ground in the electric car market. The brand’s new model, the MG4, is preparing to go on sale as the first mass-produced electric vehicle featuring semi-solid-state battery technology. According to a statement by MG’s General Manager, Chen Cui, the vehicle will be officially unveiled on August 5th and will be priced between $11,000 and $16,400 in the Chinese market.

The new MG4 will use a semi-solid-state battery

The battery used in the new MG4 was developed by QingTao Energy. This type of battery contains only 5% liquid electrolyte. MG stated that the battery successfully passed various safety tests, including a 360-degree puncture test.

With an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, the battery maintains its performance even at low temperatures. According to measurements, it offers approximately 14% better range performance compared to traditional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in -7°C ambient conditions.

The vehicle’s technical specifications are also noteworthy. The new MG4 is equipped with a 70 kWh battery pack. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle is powered by a single, 120 kW electric motor located at the rear.

Measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 2,750 mm in wheelbase, the vehicle boasts larger dimensions than the previous version, aiming to offer more interior space and comfort within the compact class.

The interior features a new digital system developed in partnership between MG and Oppo. This system, called MG×Oppo, allows smartphone functions to be integrated directly into the vehicle interface. Features include voice control, gesture navigation, and synchronization of phone apps with the vehicle display.

Production of the new MG4 has begun at the SAIC plant in Nanjing, China. Technical details and version options will be revealed in the coming weeks. The performance the MG4 will achieve with its semi-solid-state battery signals the beginning of a new era in the electric vehicle market.
