Steam is making a significant change for players using macOS. The company is completely discontinuing support for macOS 11 Big Sur and earlier versions as of October 15, 2025. After this date, the Steam app will no longer work on these operating systems.
Steam is discontinuing support for macOS 11 Big Sur
There is a technical reason behind the decision. Steam uses a customized version of Google Chrome for its interface. However, this version is not compatible with older versions of macOS. Valve also states that future Steam updates will require some system features and security improvements only available in macOS 12 and later.

“As of October 15, 2025, Steam will officially end support for macOS 11 (“Big Sur”). After this date, the Steam Client will no longer work on this version of macOS. You will need to upgrade to a more recent version of macOS to continue using Steam, your purchased games, or other products.”
Valve states that regular device updates are crucial. He states that security vulnerabilities can become persistent and vulnerable to malware on systems that haven’t been updated.
This isn’t the first time Valve has taken action against macOS users. In 2023, the company announced that support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra and 10.14 Mojave would end in February 2024. At the time, some basic updates were made to Steam to enable the playability of 32-bit games. However, this support has now been completely discontinued.
Valve requires all Mac users to upgrade to at least macOS 12 to continue using Steam seamlessly. Otherwise, all Steam services, including access to game libraries, will be unavailable.
