The wait for the fifth film in the Shrek series is growing longer. Universal and DreamWorks Animation have changed the release date, previously announced as December 23, 2026, to now release Shrek 5 in theaters on June 30, 2027.
Shrek 5 is coming later than expected
The new date has been placed in the middle of the summer season. While the studio hasn’t officially provided a reason, the higher box office returns of animated films during the summer months are believed to be the primary factor behind this decision.
In the fifth film, Mike Myers, who plays Shrek, Eddie Murphy, known for his role as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz, who voices Princess Fiona, return in their roles. Zendaya joins the trio this time. The production is directed by Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, who played the previous films.
Shrek, released in 2001, achieved great box office success and, with its subsequent sequels, has become one of the most recognizable franchises in animated cinema. Following Shrek Forever After, last released in 2010, the series has been quiet for a long time, and its return to the franchise is eagerly anticipated.
The announcement of Shrek 5 is of great interest not only to fans of the series but also to the animation industry. With its decision to revive the series after a long hiatus, DreamWorks Animation is preparing to capitalize on the growing interest in nostalgia-driven films.
How the Shrek universe, which already has a broad audience, is reshaped with current technology and new characters will determine not only the film’s box office performance but also its cultural impact.
