As the use of new-energy vehicles increases in China, after-sales service costs are becoming an increasingly significant problem. The market share of new-energy vehicles across the country has surpassed 50 percent. As the warranty period for vehicles sold early in the market expires, users face significant costs such as battery replacements.
CATL Reduces Battery Replacement Costs
An analysis conducted by the China Insurance Association of 59 different models revealed an average battery part-to-price ratio of 51 percent. This ratio indicates that the cost of replacing a battery on a $27,500 vehicle can reach approximately $14,000.
The high cost stems from the structural features of CTP (cell-to-pack) battery technology, which has become widespread in recent years. This system, in which cells are integrated directly into the pack structure, eliminates interlayers at the module level, reducing both weight and production costs. It also provides higher energy density.
However, this dense integration complicates battery maintenance and repair processes. As a result, direct battery replacement is the preferred option in the event of a malfunction, rather than repair. This approach also increases costs.
To address this problem, Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has launched a specialized repair service for GRP batteries through its after-sales service brand, Ning Service. According to the company, this repair service is significantly more cost-effective than replacing the entire battery pack.
Battery replacement costs, which can reach $14,000 for an average electric vehicle, can be reduced to between $1,500 and $3,000 through repairs. However, the service is currently limited to CATL-manufactured batteries.
Founded in 2015 by CATL, Ning Service became an independent brand in 2024. Today, it has more than 1,100 service points in 75 countries, with more than 800 of these points located in China. Ning Service offers services such as battery testing, maintenance, used vehicle battery inspection and reconditioning, and battery recycling.
The high maintenance costs faced by electric vehicle owners increase the importance of such services. CATL’s battery repair solution allows users to continue using their vehicles without facing significant battery-related costs.
