Tesla has reversed a decision that sparked widespread criticism on the updated Model 3. The brand’s integrated turn signal switches into the steering wheel have been replaced by a traditional turn signal stalk in the Chinese market. This change comes after the Model S and Model X, which were subsequently implemented on the Model 3.
Tesla has made amends this time
Following this controversial innovation, Tesla’s official vehicle configuration page in China indicates that the turn signal stalk has become standard on all versions of the Model 3. This step is a significant development for both new buyers and existing owners.

Tesla didn’t just limit itself to new production vehicles. It also offered a factory-supported solution for Model 3 Highland owners produced after February 7, 2025. This accessory, called the “Model 3 Steering Wheel Signal Lever Modification,” will be available starting mid-September through the brand’s online store and app. Priced at 2,499 yuan, approximately $349, this upgrade can only be installed by expert technicians at Tesla Authorized Service Centers.
This change also requires replacing the steering wheel, and the turn signal buttons on it are removed. The new turn signal stalk design is almost identical to the slimmer, more modern-looking stalks used on the Model Y Juniper.
The company confirms that this accessory will be compatible with all Highland series vehicles in the future. Since the Model 3 is Tesla’s best-selling vehicle globally, a similar change is expected to be made to the European and North American markets.
It is currently unclear whether this return is planned for the Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X. Tesla appears to be focusing on the Model 3, which has received the strongest customer response and has the highest sales volume.
