Nicolas Maduro praises Huawei
As tensions between the US and Venezuela escalate, relations between Venezuela and China are strengthening. Maduro’s latest video clearly demonstrates his trust in China. A Huawei phone is prominently featured in the video.
Maduro appeared before the cameras with a Huawei Mate X6 phone gifted to him by Xi Jinping. Maduro, who praised the phone’s security, argued that the Americans couldn’t wiretap it even with drones or satellites.
However, this claim has been deemed unfounded by cybersecurity experts. While Huawei’s use of its own operating system, HarmonyOS, makes the device more vulnerable to interference from Western countries than iOS and Android, no device can be considered “unhackable” or “untethered.”
This statement carries more than just a technological claim; it also carries a political message. Maduro’s emphasis on Chinese technology is being interpreted as a stance against US sanctions and technology embargoes.
Huawei’s loss of Google services due to US sanctions and its establishment of its own ecosystem offers an alternative technology option for countries like China and Venezuela. Maduro’s praise is seen as part of his efforts to strengthen his strategic partnership with China and demonstrate his independence from Western technology.
