Lara Croft, one of the most iconic characters in the gaming world, is preparing to return to the big screen with a series. Amazon’s live-action Tomb Raider series, which has been in development for some time and was even considered for cancellation, has finally begun to take concrete steps. The series’ lead actress and creative team have been officially announced.
Tomb Raider Series Coming Soon
Sophie Turner, known for her role as Sansa in Game of Thrones, will portray Lara Croft in the series. Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander previously played the role on the big screen. Despite the delay, the project’s launch date has also been announced. Filming for Tomb Raider is slated to begin on January 19, 2026.

The series’ creative team is also attracting attention. As previously announced, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is helming the project. This time, Waller-Bridge is joined by Chad Hodge, known for his work on Wayward Pines. Shogun’s Jonathan van Tulleken has been tapped to direct the first episodes.
There’s no definitive information yet about the series’ plot. However, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s involvement in the project suggests the author will bring her own unique touch to the story. Sophie Turner’s casting as Lara Croft suggests the series will focus on a young Lara.
