Spotify’s adding smart filters, and if you’ve ever struggled to find the right playlist in a bloated library, this might finally help.

Spotify’s new feature lets you filter your library by activity, mood, or genre. Whether you’re chasing chill vibes or powering through a gym session, smart filters make it easier to zero in on what fits. You’ll also be able to launch playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, or even Spotify’s AI DJ based on these filters.

For now, the tool is rolling out to Premium users only, starting with mobile and tablet devices in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa. A full rollout is expected in the coming weeks.

This isn’t Spotify’s first move in the personalization arms race. In recent months, the company has introduced:

    • AI-generated playlists based on user prompts
    • New playlist management tools
    • Custom playlist cover art options
    • Voice conversations with the AI DJ
    • Updates to Discover Weekly

Each of these small but targeted upgrades gives Spotify another edge over competitors and another reason for users to stick around.

Still, not everyone is thrilled. As Spotify keeps adding more bells and whistles, from comment sections to stories, polls, and even music videos, many users say the app feels cluttered. Some even argue that Spotify’s shift toward a TikTok-style interface is ruining the experience altogether.

The irony? While smart filters aim to make navigation simpler, they arrive in an app that many feel is already too busy.

Despite the complaints, Spotify’s numbers tell a different story. The company added 11% more users last quarter, bringing the total to 696 million. Premium subscribers jumped to 276 million, a 12% increase from the year before. So even with UI overload, people are still hitting play.

If Spotify wants to keep stuffing new features into the app, tools like smart filters are going to be essential. They won’t fix the clutter, but they’ll help users breathe a little easier. And if Spotify can strike a balance between innovation and simplicity, the chaos might just become part of the charm.
