Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has significantly downsized its AI training team. The company has laid off more than 500 AI trainers who were working on training its chatbot, Grok. This decision signals the company’s strategy of building a more specialized staff.
xAI continues layoffs
Laid-off employees report that they were notified of the decision via email on Friday evening, September 12th. According to Business Insider, the employees’ access to company systems was cut off immediately after the announcement. This team, whose contracts are due to be paid out until November 30th, was responsible for labeling raw data so Grok can interpret it and put it into context.

xAI did not comment directly to Reuters. Instead, it announced that it was looking for expert AI trainers on the X platform. The post read, “We are expanding our expert AI trainer team by 10x.”
The company stated that it will recruit new employees primarily from the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. These experts are expected to produce high-quality labeling and content using a variety of data types, including not only text but also audio and video recordings.
Elon Musk described the Grok 4 model, which he unveiled in July, as “the world’s smartest AI.” Musk said Grok 4 can achieve near-perfect scores on exams like the SAT and GRE and correctly answer questions he’s never seen before.
He also stated that he expects Grok 4 to invent new technologies by next year at the latest. Synthetic tests show that Grok 4 can compete with other competitors and even outperform them in some areas.
