Tech giant Google has filed a lawsuit against a major publisher for the first time over its AI-powered search feature, AI Overviews. Penske Media, owner of well-known publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Variety, and the Hollywood Reporter, has filed a lawsuit against Google. The company claims that the AI summaries feature is scraping content from its own sites and reducing user traffic.

The lawsuit states that approximately 20% of Google search results for Penske’s pages are now directly displayed through AI Overviews. Penske claimed that this increase would further reduce advertising and sales revenue. The company argued that its affiliate revenue had fallen by one-third from its peak in 2024.

Google, however, denied that AI Overviews or other AI features in Search reduced traffic to its sites. Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said the company would defend itself against these allegations and that AI Overviews drives traffic to a wider variety of sites.
This is not the first time Google has been sued over AI Overviews. Education technology company Chegg previously sued Google for a similar reason. However, the Penske lawsuit stands out as the first legal action taken against Google by a major publisher in the United States.
