Airlines, which previously charged for water for passengers, have begun offering free water on domestic flights. This became clear with the introduction of free water to passengers by airlines like Ajet and Pegasus. However, the fact that it was served in plastic cups sparked controversy on social media.
Free water is now mandatory on domestic flights
A new regulation by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM) has made it mandatory to offer water to passengers on domestic flights. This decision puts an end to a long-standing criticism of the high price of water. All airlines will now provide plastic cups to passengers requesting water on domestic flights.
According to the new rule, for each domestic flight, 60 1.5-liter bottles of water and 480 plastic cups are loaded onto aircraft. Passengers requesting bottled water will continue to be charged a fee for 330 ml bottles. With this change, the phrase “Passengers requesting water will be served in a glass.” has been added to in-flight announcements.
On international flights, the complimentary water policy is different. On these flights, only the elderly, the sick, pregnant women, children, and passengers requiring medication are provided free water. Other passengers continue to be charged for water.
