UK-based technology startup Somni has introduced its new product, SomniBuds, which it describes as the world’s smallest sleep headphones, requiring no charging. Developed specifically for use during sleep, the headphones are notable for their lack of batteries or electronic circuitry. The system relies on a proprietary technology that transmits sound to the headphones via a magnetic field.
SomniBuds officially unveiled
The SomniBuds system consists of three main components: a pad called the SomniMat, which provides the energy and audio signal needed for the headphones to operate; a control unit containing the Bluetooth receiver and power adapter; and the headphones themselves.

The SomniMat can be placed at the headboard, under the pillow, or on the bed. It receives audio from devices like phones or tablets via Bluetooth and transmits it to the headphones within a specific distance (approximately 60–90 cm).
The headphones contain no batteries or electronic components. Instead, they use a specially developed, highly sensitive magnetic diaphragm. This diaphragm generates sound by mechanically moving within the magnetic field created by the SomniMat.
The system is based on the operating principle of traditional speakers, but with a coil-free and battery-free structure, it relies on completely passive technology. This patent-pending system is reportedly ready for commercial use.
The 3mm-thick, flat design of the SomniBuds makes it suitable for use while sleeping, especially on the side. The foam tips fit securely in the ear, passively blocking external sounds and, according to the company, providing up to 37 dB of noise reduction. This allows for masking of disturbing external sounds even at low volumes.
The product offers mono sound rather than stereo sound, and it emphasizes that it is designed solely for sleeping, not for listening to music or everyday use. The system’s sound quality is maintained within the SomniMat’s coverage area, but does not offer stereo separation.
SomniBuds are available as a single-person set for $300. However, it’s available for pre-order with a Kickstarter campaign for an early bird price of $231. The DuoMat pack, designed for two people to use simultaneously, is available for $251 during the campaign. The company says the first deliveries will begin in December.
