Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that smartphones could be replaced by smart glasses in the future. Speaking at Meta’s Connect 2025 event, Zuckerberg stated that smartphones have diminished the sense of direct communication and presence with people. In contrast, he said smart glasses have the potential to restore this loss.
Meta Could End the Smartphone Era
In line with this vision, Meta has launched the Ray-Ban Display smart glasses. This product offers a new experience for the user, unlike previous Meta Ray-Ban glasses. The glasses are equipped with a camera, speaker, microphone, and a built-in AI assistant.

The display is designed to be invisible from the outside, without obstructing the user’s field of vision. Applications like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, as well as features like maps and live translation, can be used through the glasses.
One of the key innovations that distinguishes Ray-Ban Display from others is the Meta Neural Band. This bracelet uses surface electromyography (sEMG) technology to detect signals sent by the brain through hand movements.
According to research by Reality Labs, users can type messages through the glasses by moving their fingers as if they were holding a pen. This technology was successfully demonstrated on stage at the event, with Zuckerberg typing at a rate of 30 words per minute. This speed is remarkably similar to the average speed of 36 words per minute on the iPhone.
