OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank are building five new data centers in the US as part of the Stargate project. With these new facilities, the project’s capacity reaches approximately 7 gigawatts. The total investment in the project has surpassed $400 billion. If the current pace continues, the companies expect to reach their targets of $500 billion and 10 gigawatts by the end of 2025 ahead of schedule.
OpenAI is opening new data centers
The new data centers are being built in strategically selected locations. Three new facilities will be built in partnership with Oracle in Texas and New Mexico, as well as in an undisclosed Midwest location.

A 600-megawatt expansion of the existing Stargate campus in Texas is also planned. Two additional centers will be launched in Ohio and Texas in partnership with SoftBank.
This announcement comes just one day after Nvidia announced its plan to invest $100 billion in OpenAI and provide data center chips. Rumors suggest that OpenAI and its partners are considering a debt-based chip-leasing model for Stargate.
This initiative, which Microsoft also strongly supports, aims to further strengthen the infrastructure behind generative AI services like ChatGPT and Copilot. AI has become a national priority for the US administration due to its importance in defense and international competitiveness.
