Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has accelerated its global expansion by opening its first European EV research and design center in Munich, Germany. This move represents a significant milestone in the company’s plan to introduce its popular electric cars to the European market. Here are the details.

Xiaomi Accelerates Europe

This new facility, named the Xiaomi EV Europe Research, Development, and Design Center, will serve as the company’s innovation hub in Europe. Thanks to Munich’s strong position in automotive engineering, the center will focus on intelligent drive systems, vehicle dynamics, and next-generation designs.

Xiaomi’s choice of Germany is no coincidence. The company has proven itself at the Nürburgring, even earning a reputation by being invited to join the track’s dedicated “Industriepool” group for R&D. Xiaomi is a long-term partner of the Nürburgring, and the track even features a dedicated section in the Grand Prix layout called the “Xiaomi Corner.”

One of the center’s key objectives is to tap into Europe’s rich automotive talent pool. Xiaomi plans to collaborate with its global teams by hiring local engineers, designers, and researchers from across the EU. The company also aims to accelerate its “Human x Car x Home” smart ecosystem strategy and smart mobility efforts by forming partnerships with local research institutions and other industry players.

Xiaomi, which entered the electric car sector just four years ago, achieved great success in the Chinese market with its first model, the SU7 sedan. It achieved 200,000 deliveries in just 119 days, a speed that surprised established automakers.

The opening of the Munich R&D center directly supports Xiaomi’s European market ambitions. As Xiaomi President William Lu confirmed in August 2025, the brand plans to sell its electric cars in the EU starting in 2027. This center will play a critical role in the development of vehicles for Europe.
