The Peaceful Hips dance move, which was originally included with the DC character Peacemaker’s skin in Fortnite, was quickly removed by Epic Games after sparking significant controversy on social media.
The Peacemaker dance caused a stir
Criticism that the dance move resembled a swastika spread rapidly on social media. The backlash stemmed from videos circulating showing the swastika dance using the same movements from a Donald Duck episode many years ago. The Peaceful Hips dance was actually inspired by the dance moves from the opening scene of the Peacemaker series and added to the game.
Epic Games cited a reassessment of creative intentions and concerns about movements that could carry symbolic meaning for its removal of the move.
Following this crisis, the Fortnite community was divided. Some players argued that Epic Games was being overly sensitive and that blocking users’ access to purchased content was unfair. Others argued that such symbolic risks should have been identified before adding it to the game.
Epic Games announced that if the dance move doesn’t return permanently, players who purchased this content will be automatically refunded. What are your thoughts on this? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
