China has made a striking statement regarding the radar signature of its new-generation sea-based fighter jet, the Shenyang J-35. According to state broadcaster CCTV, the aircraft’s radar signature is smaller than the palm of a human hand.

The Shenyang J-35 leaves virtually no radar signature

Chinese aviation expert Wang Ya’nan expressed this more clearly, stating that the aircraft’s radar cross-section is the size of a sparrow. This statement strengthens the claim that the jet has achieved world-class stealth.

The J-35 was developed as a naval version of the land-based J-35A and is positioned as China’s second fifth-generation fighter jet after the Chengdu J-20. The aircraft recently participated in takeoff and landing tests on the Fujian, China’s first aircraft carrier equipped with an EMALS electromagnetic launch system. The exercise also featured a J-15T heavy fighter jet and a KJ-600 airborne early warning aircraft.

CCTV data indicates that the J-35 has a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 30 tons. The aircraft is equipped with two mid-thrust engines, entirely developed in China. This weight surpasses that of a medium-class fighter jet and almost approaches the heavy-class class. Thanks to Fujian’s electromagnetic catapult system, the J-35 can be launched with a full ammunition and fuel load.

Designed specifically for China’s first aircraft carrier, the J-35 also stands out for its modular structure. Wang Yongqing, a member of the aircraft’s design team, noted that many components, from sensors to avionics, are interoperable across different variants.

Beijing has been rapidly modernizing its navy and air force in recent years. With aircraft carriers, advanced destroyers, and long-range missiles, it has begun to challenge US dominance in the Pacific. The US Navy currently operates low-stealth fighter jets like the F-35C on its ships.
