A concerning incident occurred with Samsung’s smart ring, the Galaxy Ring. Images shared show a Galaxy Ring that swelled and became stuck on a user’s finger, unable to be removed due to its lithium-ion battery. This not only caused the user to miss their flight but also resulted in a hospital visit. Here are the details.
Flight Cancellation Due to Galaxy Ring
While lithium-ion batteries are known to overcharge or swell over time, this can become a serious safety issue for a small device like a smart ring, which is constantly worn on the finger. Samsung’s past experience with such battery issues further fuels concerns.
The incident was revealed in images shared on Twitter/X by the ZONEofTECH account. According to user Daniel, during a multi-day trip, the Galaxy Ring battery began to swell, causing the ring to become stuck in the finger.
Close-up photos clearly show that the inside of the ring, where the battery is located, has visibly expanded and is pressing against the finger. The device’s titanium shell, which didn’t allow for flexing, caused the swelling battery to transfer all the pressure to the user’s finger.
Daniel stated that this incident occurred just before boarding a plane and that he was denied boarding due to the swelling of his lithium-ion battery. The user then had to go to the hospital and was able to have the Galaxy Ring removed from his finger with medical attention.
This isn’t the first report of a swelling Galaxy Ring battery; a similar case of the device swelling in less than a month without overcharging was previously reported on social media. The swelling pattern on the ring, which Daniel has been using since January 2025, is almost identical to the previous report.
The inner ring opposite the sensors is noticeably raised due to excessive pressure from a concentrated area. This indicates a different pressure distribution than the typically “pillow-like” swelling of phone batteries.
Samsung released the following statement:
“Our customers’ safety is our top priority, and we’re contacting this user directly to learn more about their concerns. While these types of experiences are extremely rare, there are several methods to remove a stuck ring, such as soap and water or immersing your hand in cold water. If these methods don’t work, additional information is available on our Samsung Support page.”
