While Tesla is experiencing a strong year in overall electric vehicle sales, things are not looking good for the Cybertruck, one of the company’s most ambitious models. Recent data reveals a significant decline in sales of this futuristic electric pickup truck. Contrary to the overall market growth, consumer interest in the Cybertruck appears to be waning.
Elon Musk is buying unsold Tesla Cybertrucks
According to figures published by Kelley Blue Book and reported by Business Insider, Tesla sold only 5,385 Cybertrucks in the third quarter of 2025. This represents a staggering 63% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, when the company delivered over 14,000. Compared to Elon Musk’s annual sales target of 250,000 units, the total number of Cybertrucks sold so far in 2025 remains at just 16,000. At this rate, total year-end sales expectations have fallen to 20,000 units.

Interestingly, the Cybertruck’s failure occurred amidst a period of growth in the overall electric vehicle market. With the imminent end of tax breaks, total electric vehicle sales in the third quarter increased by 40.7% compared to the previous quarter. However, this positive sentiment didn’t translate to the Cybertruck. In fact, its competitors achieved significant success during this period. The Rivian R1T saw sales increase by 13%, the Ford F-150 Lightning by 39.7%, and the GMC Hummer EV saw growth of 21.9%.
Besides this dramatic sales decline, other developments have negatively impacted the Cybertruck’s image. It’s known that families filed a lawsuit against Tesla following a previous accident that claimed the lives of two young people. The lawsuit stems from the faulty design of the door handles, which allegedly hindered escape during the crash. According to Electrek, Elon Musk is attempting to find a solution by directing unsold Cybertrucks to his companies, SpaceX and xAI. The vehicles sent to SpaceX are planned to replace the company’s internal combustion engine fleet.
All these developments raise serious questions about the Cybertruck’s future in the market. So, what are your thoughts on the Tesla Cybertruck’s design and the sales problems it’s experiencing? Do you think this model will be successful in the future? Share your thoughts with us.
