Meta announced the addition of a suite of new security tools to its popular messaging apps, WhatsApp and Messenger, to prevent scams that specifically target older users. The company is educating users about online threats and enhancing its platforms with tools to detect and block scams.
WhatsApp to Prevent Scams
WhatsApp is gaining a key security feature during video calls. Users will now receive a warning if they attempt to share their screen with strangers. This feature will help prevent scammers from tricking victims into accessing critical sensitive information, such as bank details or verification codes.

Advanced fraud detection, based on artificial intelligence, is also being added to the Messenger app during testing. This system will alert users when it detects suspicious messages from a new contact. When a scam is detected, the app will also provide information about common scam types and recommendations to protect users.
Meta also shared important tips to protect users from online scams. The company urges users to be wary of unwanted calls or messages and never share personal or financial information, such as account numbers or PIN codes.
Users are also advised to verify information with reliable sources before responding, contact companies through verified helplines or websites, and avoid clicking on links in emails or text messages. Complaints should also not be published publicly.
