Gmail and Google Tasks are both picking up small but meaningful upgrades, with Google aiming to improve how users track messages and tasks on the go.
Gmail introduces new unread message indicators

In the latest update to Gmail for Android, Google is adding circular unread dots to email entries. These dots appear next to the date or time of each message, complementing the usual bolded text for subject lines and senders. The dots also follow your device’s Dynamic Color theme, making them feel native to your overall design setup.
This change rolls out gradually through a server-side update. So if you don’t see it yet, it’s coming just not instantly.
Google Tasks now lets you set deadlines
Meanwhile, Gmail Google Tasks is catching up with a basic feature users have asked for: deadlines. You’ll now see an “Add deadline” option above the existing date and time fields inside task details. It’s a small shift, but one that adds more structure for people managing multiple responsibilities.
Currently, the deadline doesn’t sync with Google Calendar or show on the mobile Tasks homepage. But it is available through the tasks.google.com web interface and when creating tasks directly within Calendar.
Gmail and Google Tasks updates improve daily workflow
Here’s what these subtle changes help you do:
- Spot unread emails faster with Gmail’s new dot
- Add deadlines to tasks without needing a workaround
- Organize reminders with more control
- Reduce visual clutter with simple, Material You-friendly designs
- Get more out of core apps without learning new tools
Gmail and Tasks both step up quietly
These updates may not grab headlines, but they make daily work smoother. Google’s polishing its apps not with splashy overhauls, but with sharp, deliberate tweaks.
