Google Fi Wireless has begun rolling out its new feature, announced last month. The company has gradually rolled out AI-powered audio enhancement for both Android and iOS platforms. This new technology complements the carrier’s recently introduced HD and HD+ calling features and aims to further improve the quality of phone calls.
Good news for Google Fi users: AI cancels noise to clarify voices
The new feature is especially useful when talking to a landline or someone using an “older device.” Google uses AI to actively filter out distracting background noise during conversations. The technology not only cancels noise but also enhances communication by clarifying the voices of both parties. Google’s primary goal with this step is to deliver “more natural-sounding conversations.”
The AI-powered audio feature is available for devices running Android 11 and above, as well as iOS users. Android users will see a notification in the Phone app during a call that reads “AI-enhanced by Google Fi.” A silent alert will also appear in the notification panel, explaining that the feature is active and guiding users to the settings. This feature began rolling out to users with version 146 of the Google Fi app for Android.
The new technology is enabled by default. However, users can easily disable this setting in the Google Fi app if they wish. To change the setting, simply go to “Phone settings” under the Account tab, then “Call quality.” In a privacy statement, Google stated that the feature processes audio on Google servers to improve call quality and informed users of its Privacy Policy. Any changes to the settings will take effect on the next call.
Google Fi’s use of AI to improve mobile call quality is a significant development, especially for calls in noisy environments. What are your thoughts on AI-powered audio enhancement technologies for mobile calls?
