The Kandilli Observatory shared striking data about its vital earthquake early warning system (EEW). Finally, a free app that will provide early warning of an earthquake is coming from Boğaziçi University. The Kandilli Observatory has shared the app it developed for iOS. Development is also underway for Android. It will be available to everyone once testing is complete.
How much has the earthquake early warning system accelerated?
30 new-generation stations have been integrated into the Marmara Region. Thanks to this technological investment, the delay in data transmission has decreased from 5-6 seconds to 0.2 seconds. In other words, the system now processes data much faster.
However, there are currently no data-transmitting stations on the seabed of the Marmara Sea. Therefore, it takes approximately 6 seconds for seismic waves to reach land. Experts describe this as an “unavoidable waste of time.”

However, concrete data was also shared. For example, during the 5.0 magnitude Marmara earthquake of October 2, 2025, the first warning was generated 8.4 seconds later. In conclusion, technology is improving, but seafloor observation is essential in a race against time.
