Samsung continues its experimental work to maintain its leadership in the foldable phone market. While the buzz surrounding the recently introduced Galaxy Z TriFold model continues, it has emerged that the South Korean tech giant is working on a new device that will directly compete with Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone. According to ETNews, Samsung plans to radically change its design philosophy with this new model, which it calls “Wide Fold.”
The Galaxy Z Fold series is expanding: Here’s the new “Wide Fold” model
According to information from industry sources, this new device developed by Samsung will have a wider, tablet-like form factor, unlike the long and thin structure of the current Galaxy Z Fold series. Allegedly, the device will resemble a small notebook or passport when unfolded, with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 4:3 aspect ratio. The outer cover screen is expected to be 5.4 inches.

The main reason for this design change is Apple’s first foldable iPhone model, which is rumored to be introduced in the fall of 2026. According to leaks, Apple’s device will also have almost the same dimensions, with a 7.58-inch internal screen and a 4:3 aspect ratio. With this move, Samsung aims to gain a competitive edge by offering users a similar experience before Apple enters the market. The larger screen is said to make it easier to hold the device with two hands and provide a more stable structure for activities like reading books or browsing the internet.
Another detail that stands out in the report is that this new model will not replace the current series. Samsung is expected to expand its foldable product range next year, releasing three different devices: the standard Galaxy Z Flip, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 which retains its current form, and the new Wide Fold. It’s also rumored that the Wide Fold model will support 25W wireless charging technology, which we’ll see for the first time in the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
So, which form factor do you find more convenient in foldable phones; the current slim and elongated design or the passport-like wide design?
