Warner Bros. Japan and GKIDS have announced that the anime film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s famous novel, “All You Need Is Kill,” will be released on January 16th. This work, which also inspired the live-action film “Edge of Tomorrow” starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, is now making its way to the big screen with this new animation project.
Edge of Tomorrow anime is coming
The newly released English-dubbed trailer clearly shows that the production will be much more faithful to the atmosphere and narrative of the original novel than to Doug Liman’s live-action film. The animation, undertaken by Studio 4°C, offers a visual departure reminiscent of cult films like “Memories” and “The Animatrix,” depicting the alien invasion through plant and flower-like creatures.
Set in the year 20XX, the story follows Rita, a young woman who volunteers for the reconstruction of Japan, and the events that begin with the explosion of a giant alien flower called “Darol.” The deadly creatures that emerge after the explosion rapidly wipe out the population, and Rita dies amidst the chaos.
But death is not the end, and Rita finds herself trapped in an endless time loop, returning to the same moment each time she dies. During this traumatic cycle, she crosses paths with Keiji, a shy young man who shares the same fate. The two must work together to break this recurring chain of death and stop the invasion.
This new production comes after a period when Asian animation films were breaking records at the global box office. The fact that “Ne Zha 2” was the highest-grossing film of 2025 with $1.9 billion, and the huge financial success of films like “Demon Slayer” and “Chainsaw Man,” has brought interest in this type of project to its peak.
