Apple is making a significant change to its screen supplier for iPhones, shifting millions of OLED panel orders from Chinese manufacturer BOE Technology to its rival, Samsung Display. This strategic move, reported by the Korean publication The Elec, was prompted by persistent production quality issues at BOE, altering the dynamics of Apple’s complex supply chain.
Why Did Apple Change Its Screen Supplier?
According to industry sources, the production problems at BOE emerged in late 2025 and have not yet been fully resolved. These quality control failures were severe enough to force BOE to halt production for certain models. The affected panels were intended for a range of devices, including the iPhone 15, 16, and upcoming 17 series, indicating a widespread issue.
Furthermore, this development has surprised many industry observers. While challenges with producing the more advanced LTPO panels for the iPhone 17 would be understandable, the issues reportedly also affected the older, well-established LTPS OLED panels for the iPhone 15 and 16. BOE had been supplying these panels without issue for a considerable time, making the current crisis an unexpected setback.
To prevent delays in its production schedule, Apple quickly turned to Samsung Display. Thanks to its vast manufacturing capacity, the South Korean tech giant successfully took over the millions of orders shifted from BOE over the last two months. This change solidifies Samsung’s role as Apple’s primary display provider, with expectations to supply around 120 million panels annually.
BOE’s Future with the iPhone 17e
Despite these current challenges, BOE has not been completely cut out of Apple’s plans. The company is now focusing its efforts on the upcoming budget-friendly iPhone 17e, expected to launch this spring. BOE remains the largest panel supplier for this specific model, making a stable production process crucial for both companies.
Adding another layer to this situation is the legal history between the two display manufacturers. Samsung and BOE were previously involved in disputes over patent infringements and trade secret theft. The conflict was reportedly settled in late 2025 when BOE agreed to pay royalty fees to Samsung. Now, Samsung Display is in an even stronger position as it picks up the production slack from its competitor.
