YouTube Launches Supervised Child Accounts in Turkey

YouTube introduces supervised child accounts in Turkey, offering parents better content control, time management for Shorts, and improved digital safety features.

YouTube has officially rolled out its supervised child accounts in Turkey, marking a significant step toward enhancing digital safety for younger users. Starting July 2, families can access these specialized controls through the platform’s Family Center, allowing parents to tailor the YouTube experience to their children’s developmental stages. By integrating these new features, YouTube aims to provide a protected environment where children can safely explore educational and entertaining content. The initiative addresses growing concerns regarding online safety, empowering parents with tools to manage viewing habits, monitor content consumption, and set strict time limits on short-form video engagement.

    • Parents can choose from three distinct content filtering levels based on their child’s age and maturity.
    • The platform introduces a first-of-its-kind time management tool specifically for the YouTube Shorts feed.
    • Personalized advertisements and autoplay features remain disabled by default to prevent exposure to inappropriate content.

These new protective measures reflect YouTube’s long-term commitment to fostering a secure digital space for the next generation.

Families Benefit From Tailored Content Filtering

The core of this update lies in the tiered content control system. Parents can select between three settings: “Explore,” which is curated for younger viewers, “Explore More,” which includes gaming and live streams, and “Most of YouTube,” which offers a broader range of content excluding age-restricted material. This structured approach ensures that algorithms do not lead children toward unsuitable videos.

Beyond content filtering, the platform has prioritized digital well-being. By incorporating “Take a Break” and “Bedtime” reminders, YouTube encourages healthier viewing habits. Furthermore, features that allow for user interaction, such as commenting or content creation, are completely disabled on these accounts to maintain a safe and controlled environment.

Shorts Feed Usage Can Be Strictly Managed

With short-form video consumption rising, the introduction of a dedicated Shorts timer serves as a critical parental control mechanism. Esin Imer Haslaman, YouTube Turkey Director, noted that the platform has been a staple in Turkish households for over 14 years, with 77 percent of parents relying on it for educational resources. This history makes the introduction of such granular controls a necessary evolution for the platform.

The new Shorts timer allows parents to set a specific daily limit, after which the video feed automatically ceases.

Setup Processes Remain Simple for Parents

Configuring these accounts is a straightforward process accessible via the YouTube application or the web-based Family Center. By navigating to the “Settings” menu within the “You” tab, parents can easily transition their child’s account into a supervised mode. These settings are fully compatible with Google Family Link, creating a unified ecosystem for managing children’s digital lives across various devices. The integration of these tools reinforces YouTube’s goal of balancing the need for educational exploration with the necessity of constant parental supervision.
