Phantom Blade Zero Player Count Hits 723,876 on Steam Launch Day

The Phantom Blade Zero player count peaked at 723,876 on Steam at launch. Here is how it compares to Black Myth: Wukong, plus sales, reviews and PC specs.

The Phantom Blade Zero player count on Steam peaked at 723,876 concurrent players on launch day, according to SteamDB. S-GAME’s wuxia action RPG went live on October 29 at 02:00 UTC on PC and PS5, and its peak arrived at 14:09 UTC, roughly twelve hours after the doors opened.

That number puts the game among the biggest single-player launches Steam has seen this year. It also sits at the top of the platform’s global top sellers chart and has spent its first full day among the most-played games on the store, trading places behind long-running giants like Counter-Strike 2.

How Big Is the Phantom Blade Zero Player Count?

A peak above 700,000 is rare territory for a premium, story-driven game. The obvious comparison is Black Myth: Wukong, another Chinese-developed action RPG, which reached 2,415,714 concurrent Steam players in August 2024. Phantom Blade Zero lands at less than a third of that, but Wukong was an outlier that few games of any genre have matched.

Interest has held up after the launch spike. Valve’s own Steam API reported more than 460,000 people playing on the morning of October 30 (UTC), which suggests the game isn’t just riding day-one curiosity. For broader context, Steam itself recently hit 43.5 million concurrent users, so the platform has rarely had a bigger audience to launch into.

    Pre-Launch Sales and Reviews

The launch follows strong pre-orders. Market research firm Alinea Analytics estimated about 850,000 pre-launch copies across Steam and PS5, worth roughly $43 million. These are third-party estimates, not figures from S-GAME. Alinea says about 62.5% of those copies were sold in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and that sales on Tencent’s WeGame store likely push the total past one million.

Critics are on board too. The game holds an 88 on Metacritic, and S-GAME pushed a 5 GB day-one patch on PC. It costs $59.99 in the US on Steam.

What Kind of Game Is It?

Phantom Blade Zero is a fast, combo-heavy action game built on Unreal Engine 5. The studio calls its setting “kungfupunk,” a mix of Chinese martial arts fiction and dark fantasy. You play as Soul, an assassin who has 66 days left to live and sets out to find who framed him. The game was first shown at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 and was later delayed from its September 9 date to October 29.

It is also a demanding install. Steam lists the following requirements:

    • Minimum (1080p, 30 fps with upscaling): Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 5500 XT
    • Recommended (1440p, 60 fps with upscaling): Intel Core i5-10600K or Ryzen 5 5600X, 16 GB RAM, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Radeon RX 6700 XT
    • Storage: 145 GB on an SSD

The timing matters for S-GAME. The game has a few weeks to build momentum before GTA 6 takes over the conversation. Big launches like Resident Evil Requiem showed earlier this year that a strong first week can carry a game for months, and Phantom Blade Zero’s numbers so far suggest it has that kind of start.
