Apple Intelligence China Launch Set for December With Qwen

Apple Intelligence will launch in China with iOS 27.3 in December, Apple said in a press release on its China Newsroom this week, with testing starting in the first iOS 27.3 developer beta on November 4. The China version brings Apple’s earlier AI features to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer, and uses Alibaba’s Qwen model inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence instead of ChatGPT.
The announcement was first spotted by MacRumors. Apple did not give an exact December date for the public release. Because of the time difference, the November 4 beta date in China will likely mean November 3 for developers in the US.
What Apple Intelligence in China Includes
The first wave in China is the earlier generation of Apple Intelligence, the set that rolled out in other markets from 2024 onward. According to Apple’s release, as reported by 9to5Mac, it covers:
- Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading and summarizing text
- Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and the Phone app, plus with AirPods
- Genmoji and Clean Up in Photos, along with natural-language photo search
- Visual Intelligence, Smart Reply, priority notifications and notification summaries
- Type to Siri and an improved Siri experience
Siri AI, the new assistant Apple showed at WWDC 2026, is not part of iOS 27.3 in China, and neither is Image Playground. That leaves Chinese users without the features Apple is now expanding to more languages elsewhere, including the Turkish support for Siri AI confirmed earlier this month.
How Alibaba’s Qwen Works With Siri
Apple says it partnered with Alibaba to support Qwen in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Siri can hand certain requests to Qwen, users can ask questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations, and Writing Tools gains the ability to create original text from scratch. Users reach Qwen by signing in to a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple. The Verge notes the setup looks similar to the ChatGPT integration Apple added in 2024 for other regions.
Supported iPhones and Language Settings
The features run on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. Both the device language and the Siri language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese. Apple says Mac, iPad and other devices in China will get Apple Intelligence only after it receives the necessary regulatory approvals.
Why the China Launch Matters
China is Apple’s second-largest market, and the lack of AI features there has been a weak point against local rivals such as Huawei and Xiaomi, which ship their own on-device assistants. The launch ends roughly two years of regulatory uncertainty, as the South China Morning Post points out, following the regulatory approval for a custom Apple Intelligence in China earlier this year. iPhone owners elsewhere who are waiting on iOS updates can check our guide to the iOS 27.2 security update, the current release before iOS 27.3 arrives.
